I won't be drawn in to the petty dramas of fools on VR, when more important things are happening in real life. VR is not worth the kind of time and energy that such small-minded people demand from it.

The last 24 hours have been interesting for me. I hooked up with a group of friends that I haven't seen for 12 years. Then when I was out shopping for some bits and pieces for dinner and some razors, I passed a little bookshop in the town near me.

I had a look in and he's one of those that just piles the books everywhere. He makes picture frames and repairs damaged books. I like those sort of shops. They have a genuine atmosphere to them.

Taking a look inside, I went looking for Eliot and Gibran, on the off chance. No such luck, so I bought a reprint of Crime and Punishment, something I've been meaning to read for years.

Before I left though, I noticed the locked cabinet. Asked if I could have a look in there and it was full of his little treasures. There was a very old copy of Winnie the Pooh, but the price was out of my range...

On the top shelf though, was a book titled 'Teutonic Myth and Legend'. Skimmed through it and the price as relatively cheap, so I've bought it too.

Did some checking on the net and it turns out that this is a rare 1912 first edition hardback, with plates. It's not the best condition, but no pages missing or ripped, just dirty.

A pleasing acquisition...

The Olympics isn't political? lol

12:53 Aug 23 2008

In a desperate attempt not to be outdone by China, CNN has started reporting the Olympic medals table according to total medals won.

Rather than use the standard table which details the most gold medals, CNN has decided that America can't be seen to lose to arch-rival China, so arbitrarily changed the format for showing 'success' at the games.

It leaves me to ponder whether other US news networks will follow suit, proclaim victory over the reds and have a party...

Making Progress

Yesterday was sort of a good and a bad day.

Stayed late at work, then went to the gym. Worked out really well. Went for back and biceps, with some ab work.

Feeling good after coming back to my friends' house, even after eating one of these awful vanilla protien shakes.

Ate a steak in wholemeal pitta bread (a Jewish thing, apparently), and settled down in front of the big TV with the Xbox 360...

Then my friend walks into the room, catching his leg on the corner of a glass chessboard. Doesn't seem like that should be bad, except that the corner broke off, sheared into his leg and started pumping blood everywhere.

We stuck him in the bath with his leg up, tied it off and had a look. He got some photos...

It's about 2 inches long and split to an inch wide, went deep into the muscle and it was kinda cool to see that occassional little pump of blood spill out. The fat tissue looked a bit gross though.

So he went off to hospital and after a few hours, came back on crutches. He had to see the same doctor as last time, when he broke his finger...

At least we got through the whole session this time. We did some number checks and I'm now at 193lbs from 205 three weeks ago. My BMI is down to 21.7 from 23, and my clothes are a bit more loose...

Target now is 182lbs, because I'm in calory deficit diet 'burn' mode, where the body eats up the fat and a bit of muscle and the weights only maintain the strength. Once I hit 182, it's pile on time, with serious protein intake and muscle building.

I should lose the fat by end September, and with extra sessions at the gym, I should make 196lbs target weight by end October.

I'm not going for Arnie style or anything, but I should get a lot of definition back. Have to mix up a lot of aerobic time in there as well.

Cut down on the alcohol to virtually 0. Same with snacks and high sugars, although it's good to stock up on those an hour before workout, where the calories will get burned quick.

All in all, an eventful, if moderately successful night.

Now, I will say this just once. I my body aches.

:P

After a truly monster session in the gym, I hurt. More than last time. Went for the full uppers, with a side order of crunches and sit-ups salad.

I can't wait until tomorrow...and I need my 'before' shot too.

I feel good though. As though I've acheived something. Minor, but a step on the road.

On a side note, my friend's finger looks like it's going to rot and fall off. Pretty grim.

I feel like I want to write, but as always, when I get the chance to sit down in front of the screen, it's all a horribly empty space.

Why is that? It's bloody frustrating sometimes. I'll find myself at the bus stop thinking up something pretty good and 'poof', it's gone by the time I'm at home.

My mind sucks sometimes.

I need a dictaphone. But then, I might get some wierd looks from other people at the bus stop...

My Current Diet

16:21 Aug 09 2008
Times Read: 1,132

Your daily targets should not exceed the below.

Calories on a day with no exercise – 1750

Calories on a day with moderate exercise – 2000

Carbs – 200 – 250g

Fat – 65g

Saturated Fat – 15g

Protein – At least 70g

Focus on High fibre, this will keep your digestive system active, a breakfast with both protein and fibre is optimal.

(brown roll with egg in fry light/All bran with skimmed milk/porridge with skimmed milk)

It is ok to have a big lunch, but eat it slowly and again, focus on protein. Protein has a high thermic affect on the body meaning that just digesting it burns calories.

Snacks should be -100 calories, this includes fruit, yogurts, ryvita/snack a jacks type things. (packet of flavoured ryvita and a mini pot of extra light Philadelphia is my latest thing).

Supper – Let yourself eat something that will satisfy yourself enough not to have an evening snack, but take fat or protein over carbs. Carbs replenish your bodies glycogen stores, if this glycogen isn’t used it gets stored as body fat. (All carbs are either fibrey, starchy or sugary…Sugary being the worst for weight loss).

Exercise – If you can’t make it to the gym, a long (30 – 45min) walk 3 times a week will give you results.

Alcohol – Alcohol is actually poison, especially to someone on a weight loss venture. Alcohol itself contains more calories per gram than any carb, fat or protein. Beer is also very high in calories…So if you’ve gotta drink – jump in to the deep end with a spirit mixed with diet drink.

Attached is a document, an ebook by Tom Venuto (my god). Everything I know is actually written in this book, you need not read every chapter but certainly the ones about motivation and nutrition are a help.

Dumb-bell...

15:15 Aug 09 2008
Times Read: 1,142

Last night, I went to a workout at my friends gym after work.

This is a guy who went from 320lbs to 210lbs in just under two years.

He is really up on nutrition and knows a lot of the exercises to develop specific muscle groups.

He's given me advice on my diet and during the session, was showing me some new ways to train.

I did a full upper body, with anterior, traps, lateral, deltoids, biceps, triceps, pecs and some abs.

I hurt now and it's only just starting.

But, we didn't get to finish the full session...

I'm working away and don't notice that he's gone off to the changing room.

After a while, he comes back, looking very grey in the face. I thought he was about to pass out, so got him to sit down. I thought he'd done his groin or some such thing.

Oh no, that would be less painful, I think.

I take in a few things, such as the blood drops on the floor, then the blood-smeared bell weights.

Finally, he lifts his hand up to show me what he's done.

He brought together two 20lb steel bells, exactly like these:

Photobucket

And subsequently mashed his finger between them, like so:

Photobucket

This picture was taken after he pushed the tip back into line, since it was almost at a right-angle.

We went to A&E, where we sat for some considerable time, being Friday night, x-rays and the like, before he gets told that the bone is shattered in there. Totally mashed.

Apparently, when he did it, he thought he'd lost his finger, hence the grey face, when blood actually squirted three feet across the floor.

He didn't cry out, didn't even cry when he god his jabs, bless him, but mostly because he was so embarrassed.

The gym has all these big ripped Polish guys there, and he was ashamed of his misfortune.

We eventually got it fixed up, sometime after midnight and went and got a KFC mega-bucket to salve his pain. Didn't work. Neither did the Xbox, since he can't use the controller now.

Better though, was after we got picked up by a friend to go get KFC, we got stopped by the cops...before spending another hour looking for painkillers at an all-night store.

Eventually got dropped of and sat down close to 1.30am, bearing in mind we had both been at work since early and hadn't eaten, and had a serious workout.

We demolished the KFC and proceeded to watch sci-fi until falling asleep. At least he will get some sympathy from his lady friend, because I had very little. Mocking is the order of the day. Especially on Monday at work, where our resident super-fast touch typist will be out of action on what may be the busiest day of our year so far.

I would probably just not go in, because my shame would be too great and besides, what use is a IT guy who can't type? lol

The tooth hurts...

20:25 Aug 05 2008

...but not any more. It's just the stitched up hole that's being a bit sore.

In an odd way, it feels better. And I look forward to not trying to stick my tooth through my tongue in my sleep.

Eating, is a joy. Soup is the order of the day, though I just had some nice haddock. With soggy chips. Yum yum.

It's a weird experience, losing a tooth. I only have seven on each side on, rather than the usual eight. And I'm lucky that I don't have any wisdom teeth, which is rare, but not unheard of. The problem is that this tooth is similar to one of those, in that the root was deep...

So, painkillers and anti-biotics on a regular schedule. No alcohol for a week and a constant dull ache.

This is the price I pay for a misspent youth and not having regular dental checkups. There is a lesson to learn in here somewhere, I suppose.

One learns something new, every day...

00:03 Aug 03 2008

So, last night I spent several frustrating, albeit ultimately successful hours, trying to get a mouse over drop down menu to work.

It sounds simple. And it would be, if I was just applying it to one page. But the same menu has to work on every page, which means it has to be set in the master template.

Oh, that's no so hard, I thought, incorrectly.

I was fully confident in my exercise and ability to work it out. I mean, all I do is copy and paste and edit it a little.

No, that would be easy.

Instead, I have to discover that I need to edit my CSS separately, rather than trying to insert it in the page.

And then, it still didn't work.

Why is that? I run the compatibility checker. Fixed a few errors, but nothing relating to the menu. At least though, I do have one error free page.

So, it's not wrong, but it's not working.

Spend a while changing this and that and changing it back...before a Eureka! moment.

So...it turns out, that by one of those strange vagaries of DHTML and Javascript, the CSS has to be read prior to the script being run on the page.

I moved the order of the script and joy of joys, it now presents me with my long sought after mouse over menu.

Why this is the case, I do not know. But I went to sleep happy and almost with a smile.

Now, I just need to rearrange all of my pages to work with the new menu system...

*le sigh*
